Self-discipline is an important quality that can contribute to your success in a great way. All successful man has one common quality and that is the inherent ability of self-control through self-discipline. Handy believes that for being a successful person you must learn to keep your thoughts, emotions, behaviors, and habits under control.

  • Have a clear goal and make a plan to execute it – If you want to become self-disciplined you have a clear vision of what you want to accomplish. You must have complete knowledge of what success means to you. If you do not know where you are moving exactly then it is certain that you will lose your way or get sidetracked.
  • Create a new habit and keep it simple – Acquire some new habits and stick to it. If you feel that it is a daunting task to stick to the new habit you have to make it simple. One great way to make your habit simple is to break your goal into some small and doable steps. You should not try to do everything at a time as it is always better to focus on one thing consistently. 

Remember, you must start early and plan in advance for achieving any goal. For example, if you want to have a better sleep then you must go to your bed earlier than your usual time. Again, if you want to eat healthier you must plan it earlier and make the arrangement for it before you go to cook.

  • Eat healthily and exercise regularly – When a person becomes hungry, they often get angry, annoyed, and irritated. These feelings have a substantial impact on the willpower of a person and prevent them from sticking to a routine or maintaining discipline. If you do not maintain a proper diet, exercise regularly, perform regular work and if there is any kind of issue in your relationship, your self-control is likely to be weakened.
  • Know your weakness – Everybody has some weakness for something. For example, some people have a weakness for potato chips, some for chocolates and cookies, and others for technology such as smartphones and modern distractions like Facebook, game apps, WhatsApp, etc. You can never overcome your weaknesses until you realize what it is properly. So, if you want to be self-disciplined then it is necessary to know your weaknesses first and then try to put a check on it.
  • Stay away from temptation – There is an old saying that ‘out of sight, out of mind’. If you can remove your biggest temptations from your environment, then you will greatly improve your self-discipline. For example, if you want to be healthier then stay away from junk food. Also, if you don’t witness an improvement in your productivity, you may try turning off your notification or silencing your smartphone to reduce distractions.
